Generally speaking, a gallon of paint will cover about 350 square feet. If this is the first time drywall is painted, it will soak up more paint. And remember to factor in whether your job will require one or two coats of paint. Dark and bright colors will require more coats of paint, as will painting a lighter color over an existing darker color. Divide the paintable wall surface by 350 to determine how many gallons of paint you will need to buy. If there’s an odd number with less than .5 leftover, round down, if it’s over .5 round up. If there is any peeling — and there usually is somewhere — it's essential to scrape off any loose paint. This doesn't just mean the parts that are already separated from the wood and ready to fall off on their own. Each spot where paint has peeled loose needs to be scraped thoroughly until you can no longer get the sharp corner of a putty knife under any of the surrounding edges of paint. Then, the bare spot needs to be sanded until the paint edges are smooth.
Like metal siding, brick and masonry are easy to brush down and clean with a solution of water and triphosphate sodium — but they take longer to dry. They can be brush painted — but spray painting cost less – about $1.50–$2.00 per square foot. Both methods offer good coverage, but many painters recommend brush painting brick because it forces the paint into more nooks and crannies for a longer-lasting finish.

It’s a lot of tedious and time-consuming work, and it’s usually wise to hire an experienced painter to tackle the job for you, especially for bigger jobs or jobs that require a ladder. A painting pro can provide an estimate by the square foot of your house’s interior or exterior, the level of difficulty posed by the house’s configuration, and the going rate for labor in your area. Start by researching the pros and cons of various types of paint. Then, if you’re using pro, get three estimates to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Painting a house is not inexpensive, but the right work pays off in protecting your home and keeping it looking fabulous for years to come.

I used Runland Painting to paint the exterior of my home. I am very pleased with the job they did. John was very easy to work with and very responsive. He always answered my questions and responded to any concerns that I had quickly. The crew always arrived on time and when they were scheduled. They communicated very well and always let me know what they would be working on. It was a big job and well executed. I have had so many neighbors come by and comment on how beautiful it looks. I couldn't be happier with Runland Painting and I would definitely recommend them. They also completed my job earlier than planned. Thank you John!
"Justin and his crew were top-notch, professional, and eager to please. Justin's bid was within the range of other bids, and his foreman, Victor, was a dream to work with. They were also excellent at clean, crisp lines. They painted the exterior of our large detached garage, which was no typical garage. Our 3 garage doors have X's as part of the garage door design, and they painted the X's in the trim color with beautiful precision. Not only that, but they painted the soffit on our covered deck, and below the soffit that extends 60 feet is a deep flower bed. They pressure washed the soffit and painted it, and you would never know that they had been there. Not a single part of the foliage was damaged. This is a class act company. Thanks Justin and your crew!" Thornton Home Painting

I can't begin to describe how great of an experience we had working with Larry on an exterior restoration of our house. Our 1910 craftsman home had a big issue with paint bubbling due to many layers of incompatible types of paint used over the years. Our home still had the original cedar siding and we couldn't imagine replacing it. At first we didn't know where to start. Most contractors were either painters that didn't handle the type of surface preparation needed to deal with paint bubbling or siding specialists that only provided removing and replacing siding. Just when we were losing hope of finding the right contractor, we read a very positive review on Angie's list about how Larry and his team were able to help someone else in a similar situation. I called Larry the next day and I am so happy I did. Although we originally reached out to Larry about painting, we were very happy to learn that his team could tackle a number of other projects for our home's exterior as well. We worked with Larry to come up with a holistic plan for a complete exterior restoration that fit our budget. Coming up with the plan was a fun process that got us very excited about the project. It also made us realize how passionate Larry is about making old homes shine! In addition to the difficult surface preparation needed before painting, Larry's team also handled a number of repairs. A section of siding had rotted and they were able to replace just that section with new cedar siding (preserving as much as possible). The back corner of the house is an addition and was originally done with a different siding that didn't match the cedar used for the rest of the house. Larry's team figured out how to replace the siding in this section with new cedar siding and have it blend in seamlessly with the original by interweaving it. The result far exceeded our expecationation of what was even possible! Larry's team also stained our fence, fixed window frames, repaired gates, and the list goes on. The front porch is where we worked with Larry to go beyond repairs and try something new and exciting. The biggest change was replacing a small window on the porch with an incredible piece of antique stained glass that Larry helped source. The stained glass was much taller and skinnier than the original window. Larry's team was able to create a new window frame and install the glass in record time. Larry went the extra mile to make sure the lighting was perfect and had back lighting installed behind the window. The ceiling of the porch was also replaced with new cedar panels with a translucent high gloss stain. Larry's team also created custom caps for the posts on the stairs leading up the porch to replace the warped metal ones that were there previously. The new caps are beautifully topped with amber glass. The combination of the stained glass, the glass caps, improved lighting and the refraction off the high gloss ceiling transformed the space into something really special. We couldn't be happier. I strongly recommend Larry and his team to anyone looking to restore an older home or add improvements in keeping with the home's original style. Thornton House Painting
"Had 911 paint my house...Gary (owner) and his crew were fantastic...house looks great...really stands out in neighborhood. They also made some repairs (trim/siding replaced, etc)...even ran into some additional repairs discovered during the job...Gary gave me a more than fair price to complete some extended repairs beyond quote. Could not be more pleased with the premium job performed by 911 crew. If you wanted your house painted right, top shelf products used (no contractor grade junk), no short cuts, and attention detail...911 is the best...and I would unreservedly recommend them and will absolutely hire them for future home improvement projects."
That said, depending on the composition of the paint, some exterior paint is appropriate for painting the interior of a home. Paint meant for the exterior of a home will hold up over time.Just be sure that the area being painted is well ventilated, as it will come with a strong smell at first, which will dissipate over time.A painting professional will be able to advise you about whether your exterior paint is appropriate for indoor use.
